The player is forced to give Frisk's SOUL to Chara, as this is the only way to keep playing the game again Otherwise, they will be stuck in a pitch black void with nothing except the sound of howling wind. They also mention going to invade other worlds to continue their rampage. They ends up destroying the world at the end of the Genocide Route, and after doing so, would take Frisk's SOUL in exchange for restoring it, permanently ruining the timeline. It's heavily implied they are the one who dealt the killing blow to Sans, Flowey, and/or Asgore, not the player.

In the Genocide Route, they directly support the player in slaughtering monsters, including their family members, to gain power. They devised a plan to get seven Human SOULS in order to break the Barrier, which would have most likely required killing people or forcing them there against their will, though this was well-intended.But the game is vague whether or not this is the case, with the only time it is made clear Chara does this being after giving Frisk's SOUL to them. There seems to be implications that Chara guides Frisk in all routes, which would make them on & off as they would do good things in the True Pacifist Route, and to a lesser extent some Neutral Routes. However, it is also possible the laughter was done out of nervousness. It is possible Chara laughed out of sadism when they accidentally poisoned Asgore. How Chara truly feels about them is unknown. It's possible Chara did care for the Dreemurr family in the end, though it is also possible they just saw them as a means to their own ends. The stuff known about Chara is not that much, with even their gender and their life before living with the Dreemurr family being unknown, and a lot is left up to speculation. The game is rather vague on Chara and their character, but upon inspection much can be found about their character through narration and how they are described and thought of by the monsters. Frisk and/or the player's behavior also influences Chara's, with good deeds bringing about their salvation, while evil deeds in the Genocide Run prove that the purpose of their reincarnation was power. A Human SOUL with the power of determination can, in Chara's own words, awaken them from death. This later would indirectly lead to Asgore declaring war, and Asriel Dreemurr becoming Flowey.Īccording to several characters, Chara's personality mirrors the protagonist's in the Pacifist Route, with both being described as a beacon of hope for the monsters trapped underground. However, Asriel ended up getting killed by humans, putting an end to Chara's plans. To this end, they sacrificed themself so Asriel could absorb their SOUL and get Human SOULS.
